The Amazing Toys Kids Have These Days

By: Shawn Wilson

Now that Christmas is over and I have had a chance to play with the many toys Santa brought for our little ones it makes me reflect to the toys I had as a kid. This will not be a complaining session, I was actually quite happy with the toys I had as a child. Lego, Light Brite and anything sports related was all I needed to keep me happy. I am young enough to remember the first generation Nintendo and how that little Italian guy named Mario swept the video game world.

What amazes me about the toys kids have these days are just how advanced they are. Our daughter received a large dinosaur toy that is in the shape of a triceratops and this thing is as close to being life like as I can imagine. I do realize the irony in calling a dinosaur lifelike but if you see this thing I think you'll agree. Now her mother bought it so I don't know the exact price but it was reasonable. My point is these new toys that are affordable for most parents are incredibly advanced.

I am assuming my parents felt the same way about the toys they bought me, it is almost scary to think how advanced they are going to get when our kids have kids. I think the great news is good toys don't lose their popularity, Lego and Light Brite are still available and to my knowledge are still selling well.

One of our daughters friends has a new video game that is attached to a bicycle. They have to drive the bike through a little neighborhood answering questions that build their knowledge of the alphabet and numbers. Exercise combined with learning and all wrapped up in a video game which makes it cool, you have to love technology and good design.

Who knows how far things will go, I think given the obesity epidemic that is happening around the world more and more toys makers are going to keep making more machines geared around getting kids off of the couch. I don't agree that all toys should be educational in fact most of them shouldn't, I think one of the sad things these days is how infrequent kids are allowed to be kids. Sometimes being goofy and rolling around is just as important as practicing your abc's.

There are lots of things to think about as a parent and hopefully some of these ideas will help!
