The Importance Of Pre-Contest Nutrition

By: Dane Fletcher

There is a major debate stewing in professional bodybuilding as to whether or not the use of a guru is a good idea. In the amateur ranks, it seems like many of the top guys are using gurus to peak to win pro cards. In the professional ranks, gurus have been responsible for some very notable comeback and jumps by seasoned competitors in recent years. Here are some of the most common positions regarding the use of use of gurus in bodybuilding show preparation.

No Gurus!

Look, you know your body better than anyone else. You've been doing this for decades and you know what you have to do to look and feel your best up there. Don't take the advice of others when your own insight has gotten you this far already. Gurus are for people who don't know what they're doing, and if you've made it this far, you obviously have a fairly good idea what you are doing. Keep your money for steak don't waste it on a guru!

Gurus For The Long Run

You wouldn't just get behind the wheel of a car and get on the highway. Rather, you'd work with someone experienced in driving who could give you advice, keep you safe, and keep you performing at the highest level. While you're dedicating your time to training, eating, supplementing, and sleeping, someone else (in this case, the guru) is spending years studying chemistry and reading books on muscle building and conditioning. You can benefit tremendously by tapping into their wealth of experience, and applying it to your own pre-contest preparation, as well as in the off-season as well. Most bodybuilders can benefit from the input of a person more experienced than they are.

Gurus on Game day

In the off-season and most of the pre-contest phase, you should be able to suffice just fine. It isn't rocket science, after all. Your goal is to either gain muscle (in the off-season) or shed body fat while retaining muscle (the pre-contest phase). It's only in those final days before a show, when carb-loading, water deprivation, and other advanced techniques matter, that the input of a person who is highly experienced in this arena comes into play. Don't diet for 16 weeks, only to blow it in the final hours because your mind isn't working functioning (due to water and food deprivation) and you need to employ some peaking techniques. Go with an expert during this crucial time.

Gurus for the special formula

Finally, particularly among the professional ranks, there is a guru who shows up on game day and delivers some magic formula which bodybuilders consume on the spot to peak 30 to 60 minutes afterwards. In the late 1990s, there was some highly effective (and highly dangerous) mercury drink which was making the rounds, and was used by seemingly most of the top 10 finishers at every show. More recently, it's been a certain powder from a certain New Jersey guru which all the pros are raving about. Whatever the current craze, there are winning formulas which are offered by some gurus on the day of the show which can deliver stage magic.
